Just tried to book an off-peak return from Oxford to Edinburgh, for two months from now. Literally the price of a laptop computer. Megabus?
Or I could pay 1/3 less and rent a car for the whole week, allowing me to go anywhere.
Cost of a flight: 1/3 of the cost of a train. What on earth?
Just hire a car. I don't even investigate the public transport options for getting about the UK these days... It's always cheaper to drive.
Cheapest seems to be to get a train to Birmingham and then a bus to Edinburgh. So, uh, what exactly happened to the public transport system while I was away? I used to be able to get a £30 non-stop return.
Tories.
To paraphrase Indiana Jones: I hate those guys.
Or bus to London and see if East coast have any deals on.
Alanah - That actually wins. LKX to EDI comes out at £62. Thanks!
If there's a cheap way to get to Scotland from Oxford I've worked it out
Shannon have you seen this - a split ticket finder currently in beta, hooray http://
There are also various car sharing websites that can work out cheap if someone's going your way.
All the cheap tickets are released twelve weeks out and are then snapped up quickly. Bizarre side effect of the pricing regulations.
There are various ways to work through the train pricing, summarised here: http://
Two Together railcard for £30 will get you 1/3 off for two people travelling together.
Sadly, there's one of me.
Ah, I read the status as 'for two, months from now' rather than 'for two months from now' :)
Sarah -thanks! That one does returns. Hurrah!
Ben, if you can get a cheap bus to London, have a look at the Megabus Gold sleeper bus; it goes from London Victoria at 11pm ish and gets in to Edinburgh around 7am. They release tickets at midnight 28 days in advance; the first couple of tickets are £15, then it goes up to £25, £30 etc etc, based on how many are bought. And the bunks are small, cramped and not private, but it is lying down, with a sheet, pillow and blanket. And free water and muffins
