Do other large tech companies not realize what Google's up to, are they unable to try to compete, or do they just not care?
I strongly agree. Not only is it more valuable, but it's more fragile - allocating your availability unwisely can affect your availability further down the line adversely, like a kind of unwanted domino effect. Watching out for yourself here also watches out for the people you want to be available for.

Facebook may be terrible in many ways, but I greatly value the ability to share & chat with my friends and family far away. People talk about face to face as a panacea, and it is, but I won't apologize for being multinational, or for wanting to keep in touch with the people I care about. We just need a better platform.
