I used to be ambivalent about heritage. But these days: I'm proud to be descended from immigrants, refugees and radicals. People who fled because of their beliefs on the Mayflower; who fled because of their Jewish ethnicity in Ukraine; who left for America in the aftermath of internment camps in Indonesia. Union leaders, anti-war activists, writers and philosophers. People who fought the Nazis, and were captured by them. People who for hundreds of years crossed borders and resettled in search of a safe home with equal opportunity. I'm proud of my heritage. And I'll fight for it.
