@riprowan Agree on all counts. I think it does help to have a wider skill set in early startups, because you end up doing such a wide range.
I met a recent CS graduate the other day with strong design skills - not just visually, but in process. Was obviously worlds apart.
That "designer who codes" article is bunk, but design and code *are* core skills. If you understand the principles of both, you're ahead.
I didn't. I'll check it out - I subscribe to it, but haven't got there yet.

... Tech has the potential to be an industry that makes the future. Let's try and make it a good one? Community is a human need.
Nothing matters except for individual achievement and we have no responsibility to our communities. We succeed DESPITE them, right?
The police are kind of low-rent. Let's make our own private police force as a service, so we can have better protection. Make it an app!
Taking the bus sucks, because man, there are all these smelly low income people on them. Let's make our own buses.
Then, we'll live in segregated communities, so we don't have to deal with the people who have to use the infrastructure we've discarded.
We'll start by setting ourselves apart with great healthcare and high-performing schools with state-of-the-art facilities.
Rather than improve our communities and build better environments for everyone, let's just segregate ourselves from our cities entirely.
