@tef IRC's only going to work for my geekiest friends, & most of them don't IRC anymore. Something friendlier is needed.
Finding that I want a backchannel with my friends (who are mostly on another continent). Twitter & Facebook isn't right. IRC either. Hmm.

@ShaneHudson The challenge is search - not impossible, but much harder with flat files.
@ShaneHudson It's not, I'm afraid (although it could if someone wanted to write a plugin!) - choice is MySQL & MongoDB out of the box.
Known is targeted towards individual users - our aim is to get people posting to their own domains. But you can syndicate to sites like Twitter and Facebook, so you don't lose any audience or reach by doing so. It also runs on the Indie Box, and is designed to be installable on all kinds of services. It's open source, but there will also be support services & an easy hosted version if you prefer. And every page is an API endpoint, so there's massive potential for mobile apps etc.

Yeah, it's a tough problem. If the software knows who you are and understands where your canonical site is, it can theoretically work backwards and find the syndication reference to the silo - but it's imperfect. I'm very happy to support the indie web tech in Known, but I've switched both the citations at the bottom of the posts, and the citations in silo copies, on my own site.
